Welcome to the website of the Aaltense Musea

The Aaltense Musea comprise two museums that tell of the life and survival of a community in normal and unusual times. We are a family museum.

  • Markt 12 - Euregional Freedom Museum
In WW2, a family with two children lived here. During bomb raids the entire neighbourhood found shelter in the basement. But there were also people in the attic, hiding from the Germans, while at the same time the local German commander had confiscated the large living room to set up his office. All the information is captured in the interior of Markt 12.

  • Aalten Historical Museum (AHM)
In a mansion house and an old village farmhouse you can discover the history of Aalten. Pay particular attention to the textile industry and the connection with the ‘Euregion’ (like the neighbouring German town of Bocholt) and the horn industry (which is unique in the country).

  • The three buildings of the Aaltense Musea are designated by the dutch government as national heritage.

  • VVV Aalten is the local Tourist Office and it's located in the central lobby of the Aaltense Musea.
